Always replaced as a pair

Wheel cylinders push the shoes against the drum. They wear and corrode at much the same rate on both sides, so fitting one new cylinder against an old one gives uneven braking across the axle — which is why these are supplied as a pair.

The usual failure is the seals: brake fluid weeps past them and soaks the shoe linings. Once a lining is contaminated with fluid it cannot be cleaned, so plan on new shoes at the same time.

What to check while you are in there

Inspect the drum for scoring and measure it against the maximum diameter stamped on it. New cylinders and shoes against a worn drum will judder.

Bleed the brakes fully afterwards and check that both sides come up evenly. Air left in one side gives a long pedal and a pull under braking.
