Read the gauge before you condemn the pump

Low oil pressure is more often worn bearings, a tired relief valve or a faulty sender than the pump itself. A pump with a worn rotor clearance does exist, but check the cheap causes first — including the gauge and sender, which fail far more often than anything inside the engine.

Pressure that is low when hot and fine when cold points at bearing clearance. Pressure that is low all the time, cold included, points at the pump or its relief valve.

Prime it before it runs

Fill the pump with clean oil before fitting and prime the system before the engine fires. A dry start on a fresh rebuild takes the edge off new bearings in seconds.

Replace the pickup strainer and its gasket while the sump is off. A partly blocked strainer starves a perfectly good pump and produces exactly the symptoms it gets blamed for.
