The swivel housing on a live front axle holds oil around the stub axle and constant-velocity joint. The seal rides on the swivel ball and is the only thing keeping that oil in and grit and water out.
A leaking swivel gives oil running down the back of the wheel, grease and oil mixing into a grey paste in the housing, and eventually a CV joint that has been running in dirty oil for longer than it should.
Inspect the swivel ball while it is apart
A new seal cannot seal against a pitted or scored swivel ball. Check the surface the seal runs on before you reassemble — if it is rough, the seal will weep again within months no matter how carefully it was fitted.
Refill to the correct level with the specified oil, and fit the split retainers evenly so the seal is pulled down square. Over-tightening one side first distorts the seal and starts the leak immediately.
