Measure before you order
A drum is a wear item with a limit. Each one carries a maximum diameter, and a drum that has been skimmed past it runs hot, flexes under load and never gives a firm pedal no matter what lining is inside it.
Measure across the friction face at several points. Taper and an oval bore are as common as plain wear on a vehicle of this age, and both give a pedal that pulses even with new shoes fitted.
Renew a full axle at a time
Drums are supplied singly, so order in pairs for an axle. One new drum against one worn one means different friction diameters left and right, which pulls the vehicle to one side under braking.
Clean the protective coating off the friction face before fitting, and bed the brakes in gently for the first few hundred kilometres. Hard stops on a new drum and fresh linings glaze both.
