How a release bearing tells you it is going

A rumble or whine that appears when the pedal is pressed and goes away when it is released is the release bearing. A noise that is there at idle with the pedal up and stops when you press it is the gearbox input shaft or the disc springs instead.

Knowing which it is matters, because both mean the gearbox comes out — but only one of them is solved by this part on its own.

Never refit an old one

It costs a fraction of the clutch and it is the single component most likely to bring the gearbox out again. Replace it as a matter of course with the disc and the pressure plate.

Grease the input shaft sleeve lightly where the carrier slides, and check that the fork pads are not worn through. A carrier that sticks on the sleeve gives a clutch that releases slowly and drags on gear changes.
