What a collapsed mounting feels like

The gearbox mounting carries the rear of the driveline and keeps it in line with the engine. When the rubber softens or separates from its plates the box drops slightly, which shows up as vibration through the floor and the gear lever, and a clunk on take-up.

Check it with the weight off: a mounting that has parted from its bonding will move visibly when the gearbox is lifted a little on a jack.

Check the engine mountings at the same time

Driveline mounts work as a set. A collapsed gearbox mounting throws extra load onto the engine mountings, and replacing one while the others are tired rarely cures the vibration on its own.

Note the propshaft angle before and after. On this platform a new mounting can raise the gearbox enough to change the angle at the universal joints, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
