More than a lid

A fuel cap has to seal against fuel surge and still let the tank breathe as the level drops. A cap whose seal has hardened lets diesel weep out over rough ground; one that cannot vent creates a vacuum that starves the lift pump and gives fuel starvation on a long run — cured briefly, and confusingly, by opening the cap.

The hinged cover over the keyhole is there to keep dust and water out of the lock. It is a small thing that decides whether the cap still turns freely in five years.

Fitting and keys

Check the sealing face on the filler neck before fitting. A new cap cannot seal against a rim that is dented or rusted, and that is a common finding on a vehicle of this age.

The cap comes with its own two keys and is not matched to the ignition or the doors. Keep the spare somewhere other than the glovebox.
