What a tired gearbox mounting feels like

The gearbox mounting carries the rear of the driveline and keeps it in line with the engine. Mountings on these vehicles are often original, and hardened rubber passes vibration straight into the floor and the gear lever, while a separated bond lets the box shift and clunk as drive is taken up.

Check it with the weight off: lift the gearbox slightly on a jack and look for the rubber parting from its plates or moving more than it should.

Replace the mounts as a set

The engine and gearbox mountings share the driveline's loads. Renewing one while the others are collapsed moves the problem rather than curing it, and the new part takes the punishment.

Keep oil off the new rubber. A leak from the gearbox or the rear of the engine is often what finished the old mounting, and it will do the same again.
