The hose that has to resist collapse

The bottom hose sits on the suction side of the water pump. As the pump speeds up it pulls a partial vacuum, which is why this hose is reinforced and why a perished one collapses at high revs and starves the pump.

That gives a very particular symptom: temperature that is fine around town and climbs on a long pull or at sustained speed. Looking at the hose while someone revs the engine will often show it flattening.

Do the whole system while it is drained

Change the upper hose, the clamps and the thermostat at the same time. The system is already empty, and the parts cost far less than a second afternoon's work.

Refill with the correct coolant mix rather than plain water. On a cast-iron block with a brass and copper radiator, corrosion inhibitor is what keeps the core from silting up.
