What the springs in the hub are for

The coil springs around the hub absorb the shock of take-up and the torsional pulses a four-cylinder diesel sends down the drivetrain. Without them the gearbox input shaft takes every firing pulse directly.

A rattle at idle that disappears when the pedal goes down is usually those springs having gone slack, not the release bearing. It is worth knowing the difference before the gearbox comes out.

Replace the set, not the disc alone

The pressure plate and release bearing do the same mileage as the disc. Fitting a new disc against a worn plate or a noisy bearing means pulling the gearbox out twice, and the labour dwarfs the cost of the parts.

Check the flywheel face for heat cracking and scoring while it is exposed, and renew the spigot bearing. Both are cheap at that moment and expensive later.
