The part that decides clamp load

The diaphragm spring is what holds the disc against the flywheel. As it weakens the clutch starts to slip under load even though the friction material still has life in it — which is why a clutch that slips on a hill with a disc that measures fine is usually the cover, not the disc.

The other common failure is the fingers themselves: worn or unevenly bent fingers give a clutch that drags, grabs, or will not fully release no matter how the linkage is adjusted.

Fit it as a set and check the flywheel

Fit the disc and release bearing with it. The gearbox only has to come out once, and there is no sense refitting an old component against a new cover.

Bolt the cover down evenly in a diagonal sequence, a little at a time. Pulling one side down first distorts the cover and produces a clutch that judders from new.
